Educational Development

As an organization of college-educated women. To help promote and enhance academic excellence through programs, tools, and scholarships.

International awareness and involvement

The goal of the International Awareness and Involvement Committee focuses on promoting a better understanding and deeper appreciation for the contributions and struggles of people and cultures different from one’s own.

physical and mental health

Our Chapter hosts events and opportunities to members and the larger community regarding physical and mental health conditions that affect the African-American population. This goal is accomplished by collaborating with other organizations that have a commitment to ensuring the overall well-being of the community; facilitating educational lectures on health topics; providing opportunities for Deltas to establish social support through health-focused activities and sports-related competitions, and providing general health education/awareness through monthly Minerva updates.

political awareness and involvement

The chapter serves as an impartial resource, striving to motivate its members to engage more actively in the political process and fulfill their civic duties. The Political Awareness and Involvement Thrust aims to equip the chapter with the means to participate effectively in political matters at the local, state, and national levels.

Chapter President

Lisa M. Derico

Greetings Sorors and Friends,
Thank you for visiting the official website of the Gary Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. We are a chapter of approximately 200 members celebrating 84 years of service in Northwest Indiana. We are grateful for the bold and courageous vision our 22 Founders had in 1913, as well as the seven women who chartered Gary Alumnae (GAC) in 1938. GAC continues to provide a legacy of
impactful programs for our communities through our Five-Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.
Over the 23 years I have been a member of Delta Sigma Theta, I have experienced our organization’s advancement and progress. New and improved technology has allowed the general public to experience GAC’s programs in-person or via an online platform. GAC has always been at the forefront because of the love we have for our community and the love we have for our Sorors.
Our theme, “GAC: Leading and Serving with Tenacity since 1938” describes our goals during this biennium. We will continue to focus on our national and regional initiatives and embrace corporate and community partnerships to bring the best programs and services to our communities.
Thank you for visiting our website. Please explore our calendar for upcoming events.
